OMG, please tell me that's a joke. That is NOT distilling equipment in that picture. Meth labs!!!!!!!!!!!! A guy has some funny looking pots in his house, and all of a sudden he is running a meth lab, great. What a fucking farce. Speechless.

I would fully support a fund for this guy even if he is distilling. But not if he's making meth though...

Oh shit...guns too? Well he must be guilty then. Did he have a license for the guns?
Unbelievable...if this wasn't so scary...it would be funny.

Ask Bugeater about his meth lab story. Clueless neighbors probably saw all the flasks and stainless and called the cops about a meth lab. Happens a lot.

The perfect union of power and idiocy. Scary. The guy who got busted really needs help if this is what he is up against.

Gotta love the reporting on this one. "along with nearly a dozen weapons, including eight rifles and two pistols" So what? Assuming he's over eighteen, and they're not stolen, then they're perfectly legal. Alabama doesn't require any type of gun licenses or permits (except for concealed carry), as far as I know.

As for the brewing (and distilling, if he actually was), an illegal activity is still an illegal activity, even if we don't think it should be illegal. It sucks, and I feel the guy's pain, but I think all we can hope for is that he has a good lawyer that can minimize the damage done. As has already been said, he'll never see his equipment again, except maybe in 8x10's in court. And if he's convicted of a felony, he'll never see the guns again either.

I used to live in a crappy ghetto neighborhood next to a liquor store and everyone who walked by asked if I was making meth. Yeah, I make meth in my garage with the door open in a high-traffic area! Nobody ever complained to anyone who could do anything about it though, one more positive of living in a crappy ghetto neighborhood next to a liquor store.

Cops would drive by and ask what I was doing and I'd tell them, they always took me at my word I guess.

I told most of the bums walking to the liquor store that I was making biodiesel though, so they wouldn't hassle me about beer or break in.

I've been sort of out of the brewing loop since I moved (we now live with my sister in a much better part of town), but if i had my equipment and brewed here I bet I'd get some static for it. Everyone's got meth on the brain in the midwest.

Any opinion from the AHA or FTH people? Or do they intend to take the word of the intelligent looking guy in the picture and leave it at that?

Both are aware of the situation and working quietly in the background AFAIK. If distilling is really involved, however, you can expect both to quickly and rightly distance themselves from it. Don't roll eyes at the FTH or the AHA. They're the reason I can buy Duvel at my local grocery store and a lot of you can brew without fear of the above happening to you. If it's determined that he was only homebrewing, I'm sure he'll receive support from both organizations.
