Bad Taste Attack ?

Advanced Brewers -give me your thoughts. I have made several dozen batches, all turning out good. However, My last two batches came out with a vinegary, metallic or yucky aftertaste. The aroma is quite good. The first batch was an all grain, so i made the next one with DME. Looking at what I did differently, I m not sure since I expand on every 'next' batch. So i reviewed the basic reasons and all seem to clear. One thing I think is different , I made a screen in my boil pot out of those frying pan covers, two sandwiched together, saucer shaped with the drain tube in the center. ( i.e, trying to filter as much debris as possible, this is not the plastice false bottom in the igloo tun mind you). I wonder if the screen is giving off a bad flavor into the brew. It is not present after the initial boil, maybe comes out later. The fermenting seems to be normal, good action, stored cool, didnt open it, single fermenting 2 months. No slime or visual indication of contamination. Body looks good, just tis taste - undrinkable even with the aromas and flavor of a nice brew. It's this extra taste that is discouraging. Anyone have any experience with screen or equipment as a culprit ? Anyone want a bottle to see what I mean ?

The aroma is quite good. The first batch was an all grain, so i made the next one with DME. Looking at what I did differently, I m not sure since I expand on every 'next' batch. So i reviewed the basic reasons and all seem to clear. One thing I think is different , I made a screen in my boil pot out of those frying pan covers, (SS I believe), two sandwiched together, saucer shaped with the drain tube in the center. ( i.e, trying to filter as much debris as possible, this is not the plastic false bottom in the igloo tun mind you). I wonder if the screen is giving off a bad flavor into the brew. I also use those small snap together ball screens to load the hops in. Of course they are made for cooking and i have used them before. This pungent aftertaste is not present after the initial boil, maybe comes out later. The fermenting seems to be normal, good action, stored cool, didnt open it, single fermenting 2 months. No slime or visual indication of contamination. Body looks good, just this taste more strongly on the aft- undrinkable even with the aromas and flavor of a nice brew. It's this extra taste that is discouraging. Anyone have any experience with screen or equipment as a culprit ? Anyone want a bottle to see what I mean ? Thank you !

This is another one of those things where it helps to look at any changes that may have had an effect on your beer...So while I can't say for sure that the screen is your problem...It would not hurt to cut that out...Plus it will at least make you feel better about your next batch... ie. not keeping you up at night (which happens to all of us from time to time)

Those flavors scream contamination to me. Often you won't notice anything wrong visually. The vinegary and "yucky" flavors are almost guaranteed to be contamination, and the metallic taste could be a contamination issue as well. The screen could be part of the metallic taste, but if you don't see any corrosion or pitting on the screen, I would say that's not the issue.
I would listen to BrewStrong and The Sunday Session episodes about cleaning and sanitizing and see if you might be missing something in your process.
Good luck!

I would try brewing that without the screen and see if you still get that taste... seems like you have a good idea what's causing the problem. Eliminate it and see.

... also, I would get this thread moved over to something like General Beer Related or something. This doesn't really belong in the Swaps section.
