Number of Messages in Thread

Is there anyway to change the default number of messages on a page in a thread from 5 to something a bit higher?
I've looked in the user control panel, but no luck.

No way for a user to do it. It is not at 5, it is at 8.

So us knowing that is there a way for that to be increased? Or is the default to help with server load?
