I use one in conjunction with a standard 10" water filter as a "Randal" style hop infuser. I use the same set up I use to filter with. I cut down the spear to 9 7/8" and drilled a bunch of very small holes in the bottom 1/3. This fits nicely in the place of the filter cartridge. You fill the area outside the tube with hops and run beer through on the way to the tap for freshly infused hoppy goodness.
