One thing I've noticed in my trips to Germany is that they rely on cars less than we do. They walk or bike a lot more than us. They also eat way less fast food than we do. They do eat lots of meat and potatoes, but way less processed fat injected over preserved corn dipped double breaded high fructose corn syrup coated crap.

It's no mystery. Americans eat more processed crap and spend more time in front of the TV than other western societies.

It would be interesting to see a "happiness index" for Germany vs. the US. I would think we could see that Americans have higher amounts of stress and less free/recreational time than Germans, leading to lower happiness, increased emotional eating, and a greater amount of stress hormones in the body which lead to weight gain.
I think we here in the US have really underestimated the emotional reasons why we are all so HUGE. It would be interesting to see the difference.
Plus walking everywhere makes a big difference.
