How do you siphon out of one gallon jugs?

Mon Nov 03, 2008 9:01 am

I went to rack my cider the other day and my auto siphon won't fit into the one gallon jugs. For those of you using these, how are you racking off? Any clever ideas out there?

I took a broken racking cane I had and put a tube on it and rolled on. Easy cheesy.

Fill up the racking cane and hose with boiled and cooled water. Sanitize your hand and put your thumb over the tubing. Put the full cane into the cider while you hold your thumb on the tubing. Put the tubing lower than the level of the cider into whatever you are racking into. Let your thumb go.

I did cider in one gallon jugs too. I just decanted the cider off the lees. Seems like I left more cider behind by decanting versus racking, so I poured the remining cider and lees through a funnel and into a sanitized beer bottle, then I covered with saran wrap and let it sit for a day in my 34*F chest freezer to settle again before I decanted off that little bit.

+1 Desert. The midget auto-sipohons are great to have on hand.
