Help with OG on Apple/Pomegranate Cider.

Sat Jan 10, 2009 6:01 pm

I just put together a Apple/Pomegranate cider and I need a litle help with my OG. My refrac said I was at 15.2 but I think that is low, possible things not mixed up well enough.

I used the following:

4.5 Gallons, Organic Gala Apple juice
.5 Gallons Organic Pomagranate Juice
2 x 12oz Apple Concentrate

The :asshat: math suggest 2928 grams of sugar for 664 fl. oz. (Based off the labels of the store bought juices)

If anyone can figure out my OG on that, I would greatly appreciate it.

Multiply Brix * 4 for your SG points (ie. 15.2 * 4 = 1.068)

Well, you have 6.5 gallons of juice or 832 ounces. There should be 3669 grams of sugar in there, or 8.09 lbs. Sugar gives you 40 points per pound per gallon... so

(8.09 lbs / 6.5 gallons) = 1.24(lbs/gal)
X 40 points = 1.050

Sounds like something is wrong, or my math/logic is off.

1.062.... that sounds about right for a cider with a little added sugars. Most are about 1.055ish straight up. So considering you added all the caoncetrate, I'd say it wasn't mixed very well.

That's what I figured. That concentrate probably went straight to the bottom and despite vigorous shaking, didn't mix in enough to get to the top when I pulled a little for my refrac sample.

Thanks for all the help guys!
