check this out

I work indirectly in the juice industry so I get the stuff almost for free, we throw apple juice at my house because we can't drink it all so one day I decided I would make some apple wine

cost

Juice = free
yeast = $0.85
4#'s of sugar = around 5 bucks

So for about $6 I have 5 gallons of apple wine

Why do I feel like a wino when I drink it? Is it guilt because I spend so much money and time on my beer while for a minimal investment of time and money I can make this stuff??

I feel like I am cheating on my beer when I drink this stuff

I have the same feelings exactly. The whole process takes 15 minutes, vs. 6 hours. And let's face it, apple wine is basically one step above prison hooch.

I make the HBT Apfelwein recipe with juice and a couple pounds of corn sugar. Also, I've been experimenting with different yeasts. Got US-05 in the fermenter right now. It's also great to have a tap handle for those "non-beer" types.

In fact...going to make a batch this afternoon and use EC-118 white wine yeast.

Your house must get kinda sticky. Hell, stinky even. With lots of bees. I at least hope you mean only the outside. Poor house. :mrgreen:

My most recent batch is done using frozen apple juice concentrate... I can get high gravity without adding corn sugar that way...
