abv

The only stupid question is the one that isn't asked. Here we go:
For getting abv from my beers I've been taking OG-FG=abv. How accurate is this?

Heading in the right direction, but not quite there.

I use (OG - FG) * 0.131

1.050 OG
1.010 FG
50 - 10 = 40
40 * .131 = 5.24% ABV

Call me lazy:

I lie like crazy to people about the abv. I basicly tell them my starting gravity in abv terms..

If my beer is 1.067 - I say 6.7%
1.041 - I say 4.1

People dont know the difference and I dont really care what it is :aaron
weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. beer!

I can see that (OG = ABV) working as a little white lie for my Coors light drinking brother-in-law, but that can make for a pretty big range to people who might know better. A 1.085 RIS that finished at 1.030 is 7.2%, while a BGSA that went from 1.085 to 1.007 is north of 10%. I'm going to notice the alcohol presence in the latter, not so much in the former.
