I ordered the parts for multiples of both today along with a 25 ohm pot. I'll try all 3 post the results.

I hear you Crut! I have the same problem with my stir plate. I cracked one of my flasks a few months ago because my rheostat is so touchy that I accidentally cranked it up trying to find that sweet spot and it flung my stir bar into the side wall of my flask, cracking it all the way across the bottom. Then I cracked another flask the following day making a starter on my electric stove. SOB!

So after spending nearly $70 going through the same thing you are I realized my folly and bought one of these for about the same price.


So, does the 1 L Hanna stir enough to get larger starters rolling? I was looking at that one and the larger one. Thnx Push.

Ok, because I am a loser pack rat, I actually found something in my garage (that I scavenged 5 years ago) that might help with my stirplate. It looks a lot like one of the devices posted in this thread. The difference is, that this was taken out of one of those indirect halogen torch lights (AC). Will this work?
