Electric football for starter?

Thu Apr 24, 2008 6:29 am

I have not purchased or built a stir plate yet for my starters. I do have an old electric football game in my basement and am considering just using that for my starters. Other than not creating the vortex, would the constant vibrations from the electric football game keep the yeast in suspension and serve the same purpose as a stir plate?

It would achieve some of the goals of a stir plate. It would drive off the CO2 and it might keep the yeast well mixed with the media, but I don't know if it would keep enough mixing at the surface for max O2 exchange.

Give it a try and let us know.
I hope my post helped in some way. If not, please feel free to contact me.

The big problem you'll have is all the yeast will bunch up in one corner of the field and no one will score.

Just make sure you go with the red team. They always seemed to win when I played that game.

Does that game have little magnetic cheerleaders too?

You know about yeast and cheerleaders, don't you?

I think some of the yeast will only go in a little circle.

Hey, here's a brand new never been tried idea --
 Maybe you can use it to continuously add hops to your boil a little at a time..... ;)

Not a bad idea, but I think the noise would drive me nuts first.

Just get your wife and/or girlfriend to sit on that thing while you go and brew. Buzz buzz buzz. :D
