Grain Storage

Sun Oct 28, 2012 7:07 am

I just got a grain mill, so I'm planning to start buying grain in bulk. Anyone have any opinions on the best way to store grains? Sealed or open container? Leave it in the sack?

Thanks in advance

I don't have a bin for my sack of wheat malt so I twist it closed and wrap the neck with a bungee ball. Might not work as well on paper grain sacks.
Let us know what you find. :jnj

I keep my grain in a bin in the garage with a snap on lid.

I hear pet food containers work well, the Gamma brand ones are airtight if you are concerned with pests or staling. The LHBS stores their malt in plastic trash bins. The homebrewdeals guy posts when they go on sale somewhere...

I grind my malt at the LHBS and store it in a bucket until I am ready to brew. A six gallon bucket holds 24 - 25 lbs. of crushed grain, which is my typical 10 gallon batch grain bill. I have a motor for a mill, but I haven't bought a mill yet.
