I definitely use a single pump for multiple tasks; for the sparge I pump from the ground up to the Mash Tun and then gravity feed out into the kettle, and then after the boil I pump hot wort through a plate chiller into my fermenter. I use a cheap little pump and have had no problems not caused by my own stupidity.
