Last QnA show - whirlpooling hops

Fri Sep 24, 2010 10:27 am

Howdy,

I use ~75% Pilsner in my brews (belgians). I have a jamil-o-chiller and would like to whirlpool FO addition.

I have had bad DMS experience with leaving the lid tight at FO and letting the wort sit before I start cooling. I now just cover the pot with the lid cracked and cool immediatly.

So I plan to add hops at FO and whirlpool starting the chill immediately (it takes ~15min to 140F) with the lid cracked. See any issues with loss of aromatics and can you use less hops than just a straight FO and no whirlpool.

-Cheers

For the DMS issue, you might try increasing your boil intensity.

The times I've had problems with DMS were due to low propane and weak boil. I boil the crap out of it now and top up with water at the end of the boil if needed.
