2 nights and day in San Diego, car needed? where to stay

My wife and I are meeting a group to ride dirtbikes from Ensenada to Cabo in February. We will arrive late Wednesday and meet our group Friday morning, so staying 2 nights and will have a full day to spend in SD.

Any help with the questions below would be appreciated:

1. Where is a good, cheap place to stay near good bars/breweries
2. To get the most out of the full day should I rent a car for the day?
3. Top five most not miss places.

1. Make friends with someone in San Diego and crash at their place ...
2. From my experience, SD is a hard place to get around without a car. I know folks that live there that use the public transit system pretty regularly. I would look at some public transit maps and see how they compare to locations listed in answers to #3.
3. I haven't made it there yet, but everyone tells me that the Stone brewery is an awesome experience. Also, I always try to make a trip to Hamiltons whenever I'm in San diego.

Fox had the cheapest car rental rates the 2 times we were in San Diego.
Near downtown we enjoyed Karl Strauss and Pizza Port Ocean Beach.
If you can, get out to Stone, Lost Abbey, and Green Flash.

3. Stone Brewing, Lost Abbey. We visited them in 2011, and should not be missed.

#1 Definately get a car for the day, otherwise you wont have a chance to visit the best places. Public tran may get you around in the city, but theres much more all around San Diego county.
places not to be missed

1. Alpine Beer Company - Alpine, Ca
* It's in the middle of nowhere and not much to look at, but the beers are absolutely amazing
2. Stone - Escondido, Ca
3. Lost Abbey/Port Brewing Co - San Marcos, Ca
* right down the street from Stone, If you go to 1 there's no excuse to miss the other.
4. Balast Point
* White Labs is right on the other side of the freeway, another 2 for 1
5. Green Flash
Also:
- Pizza Port whatever you find yourself near, there are 5 of them along the coast
- Alesmith
- O'Briens pub
- Toronado
