all electric brew sculpture questions

Sun Dec 07, 2008 7:43 am

Ok guys, so I have been wanting to build a brew sculpture for a while here. I just never really started because I have nowhere to store the darn thing. Recently though, my step-dad gave me a very nice option. He used to have a carlot, like a year ago, and its been out of business for a while, but he still rents the building because it has a rack, and its good convenience to work on cars. He told me, he'd give me a key, and I could put all my brewing stuff in there, and i could just go there whenever, I wanted, brew there, and just bring the fermenter home and pitch my yeast. So now again comes the brew sculpture.

What I want to build is an all electric one, so I can put it on wheels, and just brew wherever. I want to be able to just tell a computer to set the first burner at 154(or w/e temp), and tell me when it is there, then use march pumps to flow to the grainbed, and set the mash to the same temp, and not have to worry about it, im sure it would barely even need to turn on since it was allready at that temp, but incase it did, id have some sort of stirring mechanism so the grains dont scorch. Then use another march pump, to transfer to boil kettle. set boil kettle at exactly 213(with 1 degree differential) so I get a good boil, but dont need to fidget around, and worry about boilovers. Then lastly one last march pump to make Jamil's whirpool, and then down to the fermentor. & I have a lot of questions about this.

1) where does one get such gnarly electric burners? The only place i have found them is NB. but it doesnt burn from the bottom, you actually insert a heating rod thing in ur kettle. Which im not sure if i like that idea or not. http://www.northernbrewer.com/burners.html

2)If i dont get this burner, if i find an electric burner that burns from the bottom, id just then use a ranco, and put the probe in through a thermoweld. My question though is, would there be a problem running 3 rancos, and 3 marchpumps all through one powersupply plugging into the wall? and how would i even do that? just a good ol surge protector enclosed in a hobby box? (eletronics moron)

3)With the mash, would a false bottom be enough you think to not scorch the grains? or should I make a stirring device?

4) what do you think I am looking to spend on something like this? I want to make it a flat sculpture, and of course if im going to do it, id wanna do it right, and go stainless. ( i know it wont be cheap, but i feel if im going to make a brewsculpture, why make a cheap one)

5) any other advice at all what-so-ever you could give me. (keep in mind I have ADD so i sure i will think of other questions later, that I will ask, that i didnt think of now. and I am a noob

I do want to put a heating element in the MT. just because I like to do things overkill sometimes... and so you think if I put my SS false bottom over this heater, it wopuld keep my grains from being scorched? or you think they would still burn?

Hey Hiller,
They shouldn't scorch if you have a false bottom. You might consider recirculating your mash with a pump for the duration of your mash like Tasty does. That will for sure prevent scorching.
Cheers!

You want to mount the burners in the pots, they are more efficient then external elements. You can pick them up at any hardware store for about $18.

You will need a control panel with relays in order to control everything the way you want to. Just make sure you install a GFCI breaker and ground everything properly.

I have an element in my MT but it is only to heat the strike water, I use a HERMS to control the temp of the mash. I also use Spa timers to turn the heaters on at a set time to save time in the morning.

My brewery isn't finished, I built the control panel long before I switched to a 2 tier so now I need to remount it on the stand.

Element plugs are 240v to make removing the pots easier.
