what kind of heating elements did you use? I'm using the zinc coated copper ones (standard water heater element) and after a few brew sessions I noticed the zinc plating was corroding and now I'm left with the copper. Problem now is the copper oxide (black stuff) that develops as a result of heating up the copper element.....

I'm getting an incoloy element instead... The thought of that black crap in my beer just wasn't cuttin it!!

what kind of water are you using? I have so much calcium in the water that I have a white coating after the 1st boil.. well thats in the HLT, a zinc coated.. after the 1st batch it has a white coating.... actually in the HLT I must have wiped out 2 oz of calcium.

In the boil kettle, they are low density elements,, they are dark gray color from the factory... I noticed a slight calcium buildup on the first boil.

Or only time will tell, you probably have alot more batches on your elements.

first of all the HLT with its 1500w element takes forever to heat my water to strike temps

This won't help doing multiple batches in a row, but what about using the boil kettle to heat the first water for mashing in while the HLT heats up the stuff for mashing out? That was my plan for my electric brewery. I was thinking a 240V heating element in the boil kettle, and just a 120V 1500W in the HLT.
Aging: Gotlandsdrickå, Baltic Porter in Bourbon barrel, Olde Ale #2 in whiskey barrel
On Draft: Nothing. Building a walk-in cooler right now.
