The simple (and cheap) solution would be to go down to Home Depot or someplace similar and buy a new lid. Drill a small hole and install a grommet that your airlock would fit snugly into. Take your airlock to the hardware store with you so you can pick out the right size grommet and drill the hole accordingly. I've done this a number of times with no problem at all.

As far as your bung hole being too loose, quit bending over in the shower when JP is around. 8)

Heh, yeah yeah. I was sort of hoping to get some responses to the original post, so I figured a title with such ... potential ... would increase both signal and noise.

Switched to #7 stopper for this last brew, and still had a weird lack of activity in the airlock despite obvious fizzing in the fermenter. Changed airlocks, no go. Changed lids- actual bubbling. My new theory is that there might be a problem with this particular lid. The good news: fermenting buckets are cheap. The better news: I'm upgrading to a 10gal system soon, so I might as well buy a bunch of new buckets anyway.

So far, i've definitely found that star san on the standard carboy universal stopper and the solid rubber stopper makes the glass-rubber interface pretty slippery, but I'm not entirely sure how to go about drying off that area without voiding the purpose of the star san. For my carboys, I'm just going to get some hoods. For my buckets, I'll just go with the small fermenter hole instead of the bigger bunghole (hehe).
