Currently I have this kettle & burner:

As of recently, I have decided that it takes MUCH too long to heat up water & wort. I was doing a little research, but am not familiar with BTU and things of that nature.

I know that Blichmann makes some serious brewing equipment, but I was rather intimidated by the price.

I looked over at Bayou, because I figured that they had to have a better burner than what came with my kit. I found the following:

I know, its only $30... However, I still have the poor college kid mentality (which I will keep until the day I die).

Can anyone tell me some pros and/or cons of these two burners?

Burner-wise they are about the same. I'd spend the extra $30 for the stainless hardware and the adjustable stops on the blichmann, but as far as functionality goes there is not much difference and either would be a nice burner.

I have NO idea! It does not appear to be on their site. I can look it over this weekend and hopefully figure it out. I just do not want to wait 2 hours for heating water and wort for a brew session. Especially since I brew beers back-to-back.

I recently bought a new burner and did a fair amount of research. I ended up getting this one:

It can put out crazy heat, and I can get my wort to boiling in my large 15 gal SS kettle in seemingly no time, especially compared to my previous burner (which was probably a lot like yours).

However, it does gobble propane like none other. I only get about 2 batches about of a tank, and that is with heating my mash and sparge water on my stove in the house. I've needed to place the propane tank in a big thing of hot water to keep the tank from getting too cold, the gas is coming out so fast. However, I have only used it for outdoor winter brewing, so hopefully it will be a litte more efficient when the outside temp is above freezing. Also, the base is pretty large - so if you have a kettle with a small bottom, you may lose a fair amount of heat around the kettle. Could probably deal with this by wrapping with foil or something like that.

All things being considered, I would consider getting this burner unless propane use is a major concern.

I suggest spending the money on the blichmann Top Tier burner. Once you have it, you have it, I know the cost is more but this unit kicks butt. It burns fuel at a good pace when your getting you wort to boil but I think the wasted brewing time is spent waiting for the boil. I do 5 gal batches boiling 7.5 gal at flame on and this is boiling in about 11 min. For a good while I've been using one of these, which has this burner. That's rated at 55k BTUs, and it is slow for 10 gallon batches. So I recently bought one of these, which features this burner. That's rated at 185k BTUs. I don't know how much of the difference comes from the burner and how much from the regulator, but either way that should speed up my boil. I haven't used the new one yet. I'm actually going to cut it from its stand and attach it to my brewstand, hopefully by Big Brew Day, although I might go all electric then too.
