Seeing as I've already did 5 trips to lowes this week...
would just a 90 deg elbow be enough to pick up most the wort out of the keg? Or should I build something like the pick up they sell at MoreBeer?

My HLT has a piece of stainless tubing that goes into a compression fitting attached to the 1/2" NPT thread. I just put a nice bend in the tubing until it reached down just about to the bottom of the keg. You could do the same thing with soft copper tubing.

Right now I plan on building a jamil chiller and between a little extra copper from the recirculate tube and a snip of sillicon tubing making a pickup to collect from the side of the keggle.
Other much more expensive option would use a false bottom setup. You would still need to leave some dead space for the break material bit the false bottom will filter out the hops.
