Moving up to All Grain... kettle question

In the process of moving up to all grain brewing, and the acquisition of a kettle is the last step. My curiousty has been picqued with the idea of a converted keg as my brew pot for two reaons: (1) volume and (2) cost.

Only question (and it may be a stupid one), where can I get a good, used keg?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Call around to some scrap yards. That is where I got mine. $20 a piece I think it was. Failing that I have 6 or 7 in the garage if you want me to ship you one.

Craigslist is another great place to find kegs or other brewing related stuff.

There might be legality issues buying form a third party but worth a look.

Hey, on the keg conversion thang; What do you use to clean the darn thing? I need to clean the outside and inside of mine. I have gotten suggestions like Oxyclean... PBW... any other suggestions?

I also hear that if you rub too hard with something you remove the protective layer or something. What's that all about?

For anything stainless, the best thing to clean is Barkeeper's Friend and a green scrubbie. It will remove almost anything with enough scrubbing and it passivates the stainless as it cleans.
