Well I finally got a chance to put a heatstick together. I just followed the instructions on
http://www.3d0g.net/brewing/heatstick. The first bit of JB Weld is curing, so I'll be able to test it out in a couple of days. I was a little apprehensive about making one of these, but I checked the ground with my voltmeter, and put together a GFCI extension cord. As much as I love beer, I love not being electrocuted even more.
I do have a question about the JB Weld, though. I put a small bead of it in the threads of the slip joint that secures the heating element in place (might have been overkill). I wiped off the excess so very little, if any, of the JB Weld will be in contact with the wort. I've read through the FAQ's on the JB Weld website, and it says it's non-toxic. However, there are warnings all over the package about consumption. I'm assuming that once it cures it will be completely inert. Anyone have any experience with this stuff? I'd be equally displeased with poisoning myself, as I would be getting hit with 120V.
