I have been thinking about ways to filter my water prior to brewing, and on a whim I checked the water dispenser from my fridge to see if my racking tube would fit over it. It didn't exactly fit tightly, but an old racking cane fit onto it perfectly, and I can fit the racking tube over that!

We already get new filters shipped to us every 6 months, so I was wondering what you guys thought of using this to filter my water?

It's a Kenmore Pur water filter, and it says it is a physical and chemical filter.

How do you guys filter your water?

I'd think that it would take a looooong time to get enough water from the fridge dispenser. I've yet to get a detailed water report though.

Forget the fridge water filter. It's too small and the water coming out is cold, which means that you're going to have to spend extra energy and time to heat.

Go with a 10" cartridge with a carbon filter like mentioned above. You do need to run all activated carbon filters at low flow rate in order to maximize the water contact time with the filter media. The 10" filters should be run at a flow rate of no more than 1 gallon per minute. This will remove all chlorine and chloramine from the water. The other good side effect is that the filter will likely last a very long time. Expect to get about a 1000 gallons of use out of one of these if the flow rate is low. Be sure to get a pool test kit for Total Chlorine so that you can occassionaly check the filtered water to make sure the filter is still good.

I've used the fridge filter before. It works but as noted it takes a long time. I connected it to my sink so I was not "wasting" cold water, just standard temp tap water.

I made my first all grain yesterday. I haven't had a chance to pick up a water filter yet, so I ( ) used the fridge water filter.... never again! Like what was stated earlier.... it took, FOREVER!

is this ok to use since the filter is 100-micron fiber filter, as opposed to the morebeer one has a "10" carbon block filter. Also filters out sediment to 10 micron"

what would be the difference

My guess would be if you are worried about sediment then the finer filter would be better. But you get slower flows. So all depends on what you are looking to accomplish. I wanted a high flow carbon filter. I still hit my water with a Campden tablet anyway.
