Taking the chill plate out of an old dorm fridge.

Tue Jun 19, 2012 1:46 am

A neighbor left his old dorm-style fridge when he moved away. It wasn't really a good size or shape to use on its own so I thought I'd take it apart and just take the cooling elements out and build a new box around it. Apparently everything inside it is embedded in the foam insulation. Is there an easier way to get the guts out besides slowly cutting away the foam?

Burn it out... hold your breath.

*not a serious suggestion...

Just take the door off of it and leave it as is and just extend it out bigger. Just make sure you insulate the new part of it good.

If it's just styrofoam holding it in, you can pour a little gasoline on the foam. It will melt away - just make sure you're in a well ventilated area and everything is unplugged.

Acetone will be way better than gas as far as odor/ventillation requirements go. Try to use as little as possible with whatever chemical you use, it melts the foam and that can get messy.
