Have read about this on other forums, and put it to the test today. I went to safeway to swap out a sodastream cylinder for a new one. BUT, thought I would ask how much to get a "spare". It seems that there is only one barcode on a sodastream bottle, and when scanned it gives the price for a swap $11.65. The dedicated safeway staff gave it no further thought and handed over the new cylinder without a return, for the eleven bucks. So.... if you like to use sodastream bottles for your kegs, then gettem while they are hot. They will no doubt realise the error of thier ways soon enough.

Only talking the 40 litre ones, haven't tried for one of the 100s. But I might give it a go this weekend. Safeway did it and I have read about the same thing happening in Kmart and Woolworths/BigW

What, by my Aunties Panties, is a SodaStream bottle?

A sodastream bottle, or more accurately Gas Cylinder is a 330g cylinder used in home soda making machines called Sodastreams. I actually thought that they were a reasonably international phenomenon.

A fair few people have adapters made for them and use them with regulators, as C02 supply in party keg systems. I took a more direct route and just butchered the whole soft drink machine and use it to power my homemade party keg system (which untill VERY recently was my only keg system) The photo below shows the Drink machine with my added Gas line and schrader valve filler, on the right is the party keg made froma garden pressure sprayer, schrader gas in valve and a picnic tap. It all works a treat and will hold enough pressure to force carb as well as serve. Handy little setup.



Normally the cylinders cost about $12 to swap for a full one, and about $45 to get without swapping. Safeway was a bit slack and I picked up a couple of keepers for the swap price.

Interesting. I have never seen a consumer grade system like that marketed here in the states. I am sure that the Coke and Pepsi marketing machines would never let such a thing happen here. Much better to fill the waste stream with plastic and aluminum, plus all of the packaging that accompanies them.

I like the bug sprayer set up. Do you have a beer called "Bug Juice" to serve in it? You could name an IPA "Weed Killer" and it would be appropriate.

I came across this idea of using a bug sprayer as a keg. I like the idea of 5L keg....I can test out many small batches.

I have written a really quite comprehensive guide to building a party keg out of these little pressure sprayers and how to use them. Some of it wont be relevant to you over that side of the pond, but a lot of it will.

and of course you need to wash them out ... lots of non-foodgrade lubricant in a bugsprayer, any DDT just adds flavour. Unfortunately I bought mine new for about $8 so I missed out on the beer enhancing properties of the actual bug poison
