Doughing in, it's a brisk 17F but should get better as the sun breaks the horizon.

Brewed on Saturday as well. It's chugging away pretty strong in the chest freezer right now. A couple small hiccups in the process but all in all it went well and was a fun chilly brew day. Started about 10 am and my garage which seems to function as an ice box was sitting at about 20 F. Not that big of a deal it just keeps the beer you're drinking cold.

I can only get Northern Brewer hops in leaf format around here right now and haven't really mash hopped before. Is there any issues with this versus pellets?

Other than calculating your IBUs differently. Pellet hops generally get about 15% better utilization. Or is that, you need 15% more leaf hops to be the same as pellet? I know there's a "%" in there somewhere...

And it will affect your siphon/drain differently. Otherwise, there should be no ill effects on using leaf vs. pellet

I only use whole hops for mash hopping.

+1 Pellets in the mash can plug your mash up quickly. I ONLY use whole hops in the mash with my setup.

If you can't get any NB whole hops, I'd suggest you split the pellets as FWH and late (around 5-10 mins) additions instead. The reason is that the mash hops aren't subjected to the boil while the fwh's are, so you will increase your bitterness by a lot if you use the whole amount, especially if you do a long (90 min) boil. Add the remaining 1/2 as extra late hops to make up the flavor/aroma. This won't taste the same as mash hopping, but it will be approximate from my experience.
