Tue Feb 05, 2013 8:06 pm

I'll start the list of things you should check out....
There's a ton of cool stuff to do here but here's the places I always go...
I'm sure more will chime in with their favorites, but they don't know what they are talking about.
You see here, everybody has their own favorite spots.
If you don't end up gaining weight here, you didn't go to the right places in town.

Bars in town:
Monks - back bar - Dirty Mussels and sour beer
Nodding Head - Hopefully they will have their Berliner Weisse on
Eulogy - Good Belgian bar
Devil's alley - upstairs - Good IPAS
The Dandelion - Good English cask beers
Just search craft beer in Philly and you'll find a bunch more...

Philly food:
Late night cab trip to Toni Luke's for:
Uncle Mike's Sharp
Roast Pork with Broccoli Rabe Sharp
Chicken Cutlet with greens sharp
Cheese Steak sharp

or
Geno's
Cheese steak with and wiz then hit the cherry peppers

or
Pat's if you have too...
Cheese steak with and wiz then hit the cherry peppers

Reading Terminal Market
Amish Chicken stand - for rotisserie wings
Termini Brothers - Cannoli - When they ask you which one - say one of each.
Dinic's pork sandwich

Sit down dinner
Ralph's Italian restaurant - Best Italian restaurant in the city - Cash only
White or Red Mussels
Veal Rollantine or Veal Parm if your guy
Chicken Sorrento or Veal Cappicossa if your a girl
Side of scarole for each of you.
Tiramusu for dessert

Good tourist spots:
Liberty Bell - old school
Independence Hall Plaza - old school
Betsy Ross house - old school
Ben Franklin Museum - old school
Elfreth's alley - old school
Philadephia Mint - Money
City Hall - cool structure
Franklin Institute - kids
Museum of Art - yuppy, Rocky
South street - see the crazys
Italian market - food
Reading Terminal - philly farmers market

Sarcone' bakery - best bread
Sarcone's deli - best italian hoagie - get an old fashioned italian with oil.

There are really cool neighborhoods if you venture away from the hotel, but you will need a local escort in some of them.

Unfortunately, the Phillies are not in town that week, that's always cool to check out. If your a big baseball fan you can do ballpark tours almost any time. I do highly suggest going to the original Pat's/Geno's locations and doing the challenge, get a cheese steak from each location and try them, the places are almost right across the street from each other. I suggest you try a "whiz-with". Also, check out Chickies & Pete's and get some crab fries there, they are awesome.

If you are like me, any time you travel you have to hit up every brewery in the area.

Breweries in the city:
Yards
Nodding Head
Triumph
Philadelphia

Others close by:
Dock Street
Manayunk
Iron Hill
Tired Hands
Earth Bread + Brewery
Flying Fish

If you are bringing the wife/gf and she wants to shop...the King of Prussia mall is worth checking out.

If you are extending your stay to sightsee, I suggest you come toward Lancaster to see some Amish, we also have our good share of breweries. Troeg's in Hershey is well worth checking out and while your there you might as well to the Chocolate World tour (free) and spend sime time at Hershey Park.

Stay away from Jersey and you will be OK. :)

If you're heading out west don't forget about Victory in downingtown, although they're dicks and don't let you do tours anymore..

Had my first Cantillon at Monk’s. The bottle cap is on my desk in front of me as we speak.

I don’t think it should be Pat’s or Geno’s, it should be Pat’s AND Geno’s. One of the great Philly debates is which one makes the best cheesesteak. They’re essentially across the street from each other. Get one of each, decide for yourselves. Wit’, American. Add some ketchup.
I see drunk people . . . . . .

Oh? Because we'll get lost or because the locals tend to attack people wearing :asshat: and :nutters: ?

Keep your eyes on the AHA website. All of the host committees will be adding suggestions and links to area attractions with travel recommendations. Pre-conference committee is planning a number of chartered tours to area breweries on Wednesday (getting back in plenty of time to hit BNA8). Tentative destinations include Flying Fish, DFH, Victory and Sly Fox (all separate tours). Iron Hill is fully on board, so one of their brewpubs will probably be the lunch stop for each tour.

The locals do not discriminate.

Do not wear your Cowboy's Jersey and you will be fine. Locals only attack people wearing out of town jerseys. :)
