Industrial-sized stir plate?

Sat Apr 22, 2006 2:21 pm

Ok, after seeing what my stir plate did to my starter, it got me thinking. Why couldn't you build a BIG one that you could slide underneath a carboy? Am I on the cousin or what? Ferment that bad boy in a day!

Just a thought...

Russ, I think it can be done with a box fan motor. I used a desk fan for my stir plate and it works like a champ. It will vortex a gallon starter with no problems. I thought about using it will my last 3gallon starter but just let it ferment out.

I built one already (two actually and I gave one to Justin). I built it w/ the idea of doing just that, stiring a carboy. I used a 110v muffin(computer) fan, 3/4 in melamine and a fan controller. I wanted to make really big starters for lagers in my 20gal conical. I have a 3gal carboy that works great. I did have an isssue w/ the domed bottom on the carboy. The stir bar didn't want to stay in the middle, I found a special stir bar called a barbell (it shaped like a... Barbell) and it took care of it.

Where did you get the barbell-shaped stir bar? Like HH, I was thinking about a 110v box fan and wiring it through a sliding light switch. How big would magnets need to be on this beast?

With a pinch of the anti-foam stuff, I think this could work!

I used a ceiling fan controller (the dimmer switch didn't work as well)

I got the stirbar at http://www.stirbar.com

I stacked the magnets like a roll of pennies The magnets come 10/pkg

Depending on the size of the stirbar, you can use more/less magnets

Thanks for the info, Doc. BTW, the stirbar.com thing is too funny.

So is this really how much the barbell stir bars cost? Do you have 1-2 from your 10-pack you'd sell? :D
