Recalculating hop utilization for no-boil recipe

Thu May 04, 2006 8:26 am

So I got my kit today in the mail for a La Fin du Monde clone. It looks pretty good with a couple of exceptions. First, it doesn't have any coriander or orange peel which I'm pretty sure are typically used to make it. Maybe I'll add some of these myself anyway.
My bigger concern though is that with 9.25lbs of LME and 3lbs of specialty grains, I'm afraid that it's going to be WAY darker than I want. I was thinking about adding the LME toward the end of the boil to avoid unnecessary caramelizing/darkening. If I do this though, its obviously going to affect (increase) the hop utilization. So my question is, how do I recalculate the amount of hops I should use to get approximately the same IBU and hop flavor when boiling without extract?

I don't think it will appreciably affect the hop utilization, but if you are concerned only boil the hops for 40 minutes, that should be about right.
NOTE THAT IS AN EDUCATED GUESS.
I don't think you will notice an appreciable change in bitterness with the low AA hops you were probably given for the kit.

I wouldn't worry about it. I agree wit BUB. I don't think you'll taste the difference. How much and what kind of hops?

Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.

I would just leave it the way it is. If you really want to know just use some brewing software to figure your 60 and 30 additions with the reduced extract boil. The late addition will not really affect the IBU calculation.
