Man...I just called home depot and they have 50' coils of copper tubing for $74...this seems a bit steep...or am I just being cheap?

Yes, $74 is pretty steep for 50ft of copper tubing. I believe I paid less than $40 for it.

Another good trick, that you can see on Jamil's page, is recirculating ice water once the initial cooling (down to 100F) has been done. This can be done with a small sump pump and a bucket with ice water.

I have 50ft or 3/8" tubing as a chiller and get the wort down to 80*F (using 70F tap water) within 15 min.

Actually I guess the price of copper has trippled from what I've heard on some other brewing sites and thats why the price has jumped.

Wow, does this mean the chillers sold on morebeer.com have now a price that changes daily based on the current price for copper

It also might make plate chiller more affordable

I broke down and bought a plate chiller. I use my old imersion chiller in a bucket of ice water as a pre-chiller. My tap water this time of the year is 71 degrees, and by August will be 78-80 degrees.

Yea i checked around...some plces are charging $125 for 50 ft of tubing. One said that the chinese are buying copper up and selling it back to us. What I do know is one store said they won't quote a contractor any more than 24 hours in advance. Like gas prices it's fluctuating radically every day for the last month they said....figures. On the positive side i got another 25 ft piece i'm gonna put in a bucket of ice for 16 bucks at a sears hardware going out of buisiness sale. That should help to cool down the outgoing water some and into the wort chiller. Ice plus some salt = pretty damn cold.

if anyone was looking for copper tubing 3/8 OD I found some on EBAY for last months pricing for 50'. Get it now cause everywhere i look it's double this cost. 16 left.

I don't know if you have a Cole's Do It Center or not, but I found their coil to be fairly cheap. I went to Home Depot and they wanted about $80.00 for 50ft. At Cole's it was $46.00. I think that is a good deal. I say that some stores are just using scare tactics to keep driving prices up. I would just shop for a while. As for it being cheaper to buy a ready made chiller, I figured out that I can make two for the price of one after the shipping costs are figured in and everything. Plus I get the satisfaction of knowing I made it.

you could always use a 50 ft hose in a bucket with water and ice as a prechiller...
