Yes, $74 is pretty steep for 50ft of copper tubing. I believe I paid less than $40 for it.
Another good trick, that you can see on Jamil's page, is recirculating ice water once the initial cooling (down to 100F) has been done. This can be done with a small sump pump and a bucket with ice water.
I have 50ft or 3/8" tubing as a chiller and get the wort down to 80*F (using 70F tap water) within 15 min.
