I know that part of this community brew is to learn how to evaluate beer. So sending beer to each other and judging it is still an option. But the problem with that is that if you sit down and judge a beer all by yourself, you might miss a huge flaw and score a beer in the 40s when it should have been in the 20s. Don't get me wrong here, competitions aren't perfect either. The last competition i judged in, I was doing light lagers with a national judge. I scored the light lager with a 21 because it was loaded with diacetyl. The national judge scored it a 42 and said that I should be more kind and ignore the diacetyl....i nearly slapped him in the face for saying something so stupid. I have actually come across a lot of old national judges who if they were to sit down and take the exam again, they'd fail it.

Sending in to the morebeer forum comp would be nice but i think its a little too early.

any thoughts?

If we can find a good comp to enter, I'd be up for it. That was one of my Brew Years resolutions... enter a couple of comps this year - I've been slacking

I agree with brewdaddy... I don't want to enter the comp instead of the Community Brew, but I'd enter a comp as well as the Community Brew. Let's scare the crap out of some comp and enter a shit load of Saisons!!

We are having John Palmer out as our guest judge this year. Dave Miller should be judging as well too.

I like Pollo's suggestion. The deadline for the Nashville comp is the beginning of October. That gives me time to send my Comm. Brew in by the 11th and still have plenty of time to send to Music City as well. Any way we can nudge Palmer into the Saison category for judging?

Sorry Dirk. Mine wouldn't be ready by August 8 for the Alamo and I know at least a few people brewed theirs later than I did.

I'm bias but I think we have a great line up of judges for our competition. 2 noted Homebrew book authors (Palmer and Dave Miller), a 3rd generation Master German Brewer from Boscos, the Technical Chair and Secretary for the Master Brewers Association of the Americas, plus most of the judges we get coming in from out of town are atleast BJCP National or Certified.

I can talk to our competition director to see what we can do about making sure the Saison category is covered by either John judging at that table or another very qualified set of BJCP judges. Typically what we do is let the out of town guest choose from a list of a few categories to judge and the guest also judges BOS. Thats what we did with Jamil last year. I can't say for sure because its not up to me though.

Tell you what I will do for the BN. For everyone entry that is sent to our comp from the BN in the Saison category I will donate out of my pocket a lump payment back to the Brewing Network based upon how many entries we get from this forum. Just either enter you homebrew club as the BN or shoot me a PM through this forum and let me know your name. I am the register for the comp so I will have access to the database of entries.

Deal? :jnj
