whirlpool chiller design

Sat Sep 04, 2010 5:21 am

I have looked at jamil's version, looks a bit to complicated for me to build unless some one can explain it to me becuase I cannot find any designs online.

What I have is just a food grade pump I planned on using it to make a chiller, I was just going to run some tubing ( what ever size would be best) down into the kettle one side pulling the wort out to the pump and on the other side sending it back into the kettle. with the tube going back into thw wort attatched to the side of the kettle (aslong as I can remove it) thus producing the whirl pool. does this sound logical or just a pain in the ass. Any Ideas would be helpful thanks.

The only problem with what you have described is the possibility of a wild stream of HOT wort out of control hitting you in the face. Make very sure that the stream of hot wort is absolutely controlled as to where it is pointed. Lock it down. Hoses have a way of getting out of control. I would use a piece of gently bent copper.

The idea of the whirlpool chiller is that the whirlpool attachment is either soldered on or secured very well to the emersion chiller. The whirlpool attachment that goes on to the emersion chiller is only about 14 bucks or so from More Beer. As Tasty says, "Its a solution is search of a problem".

I'm a fan of the clockwise whirlpool unencumbered by an immersion chiller.

Tasty can you go over your set-up? I'm looking at your picture and a picture of the chiller. It looks like you pump out of the chillers wort out. That would seem to put all your bucks on if anything makes it out of the chiller. And the exit volume out of the chiller would need to be more than a trickle to properly prime the pump. Is that the regular March pump?

Also what is the device on the out side of the pump? The handle of the spoon in laying on it.
