new SS pot... anything to prep or prime it before 1st use??

Sat Apr 16, 2011 5:44 am

I've got a 9 gal ss pot which is still in the box. Want to brew my extract hefe this weekend. Is there anything in particular I need to do prior to using the pot to brew?

Any special care instructions?

For stainless there is no special preparation. All you need to do is clean it good with hot soapy water to remove manufacturing oils. Don't use anything abrasive.

wish I went with a 10 g pot

Tue Apr 19, 2011 7:28 am

my new pot is 35 qt, so just under 9 gal (supposedly). I was going to go with a 7 gal boil, but went closer to 6.5. Was shocked to see how close that brought me to the top. Only one little foam over (I let myself get too far away from it... lesson learned). Definitely need to keep a close eye when getting it up to the boil.

Chilled it down to mid 70s pretty quickly, but life had me move it into the fermenter before I could get it into the 60s. I used a larger plastic tub with several inches of cold water to get it down to the 64° range. Shooting for Jamil's suggestion of 62° with the WLP300.

I siphoned from the pot to the fermenter which took forever (3/8" tubing). I didn't have a hop sack, so I siphoned rather than lifting and dumping, trying to leave any of the hop sludge behind. Got just to the 5 g marker on the fermenting bucket, so next time I might either start with 7 gal, or plan to add a little spring water to top it off to the 5.5 gal I want in the bucket. Would just need to adjust the numbers accordingly (using BeerAlchemy).

Pitched the slurry from my starter (about 1700 ml starter, chilled for 2 days in the fridge, removed several hours before pitching, decanted) once the fermenter was in the mid 60s. No activity last night, but was bubbling every 8 sec this morning before I left for work.

All wheat extract (briess DME, muntons LME) with Hallertau bittering hops. 1.052 OG

Fingers crossed

Get some foam control from Northern Brewer or Williams Brewing if your LHBS doesn't have it and you won't have to worry about boil overs. Works great for boiling starters on the stove also.

Fermcaps is the next purchase.

Also, I had picked up a packet of warflock tablets a couple weeks ago! I completely forgot I had them. Doh!
