Flying with kegs

Fri Jul 29, 2011 11:25 am

Has anyone ever checked a corny on an airline? I'm brewing for an out-of-state wedding and thought a keg might be safer than shipping 2+ cases of bottles. I realize it'd get pretty good and shook. I'd probably pack it in a cardboard box.

Anyone tried it?

thinking 5 gallons of liquid might get you pulled into the special line...

But really, I'd be concerned about the pressurized vessel adn the stresses that fight might have on it.

Those kegs are rated to 130 psi. I doubt you would get anywhere near that kind of pressure differential on the keg even in a complete vacuum let alone in the cargo hold of a plane.

If the keg were pressurized to 30 psig (2 atm) the absolute pressure would be 45 psia (3 atm) and that is the pressure that would pertain if the keg were placed in a vacuum chamber. The pressure vessel of an aircraft in flight is held to an internal pressure altitude of about 8000 ft which is about 8" of vacuum or 8*15/30 = 4 psi below atmospheric. The pressure differential between inside and outside of the keg would thus be 30 + 4 = 34 psig. The pressure would not, thus be a problem. The TSA would. I have no idea how they would respond to someone who showed up with a keg of beer. I suppose the fact that it contains alcohol would convince them that if you are a terrorist at least you are not an islamic terrorist.

I did read on the TSA website there are no restrictions on Beverages with less than 24% alcohol....no idea if that means you can do it or not but may mean its possible..It might be cheaper to figure out a way to ship it though...unless you fly southwest since most charge for extra baggage

I have also been thinking about this since a friend wants me to brew for his wedding....and I am thinking driving is going to be the easiest...

LAX and PHX only allow 4oz of any liquids to go on a plane... so you might have some trouble unless you bribe the drunkards.. er pilots, no??? :drink
